Types of Electric Cars
There are four types of electric vehicles in Australia.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): These EVs (also known as ‘plug-in’ EVs) are fully electric and use an external electrical charging outlet to charge the battery.
Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs): Powered by both fuel and electricity. A PHEV has an internal combustion engine (ICE), and can run on liquid fuel or diesel as well as electric battery power.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs): Offer a greater range than a BEV and usually use a fuel cell rather than a battery. Typically fueled by hydrogen.
Non-plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (HEVs): Instead of using an external plug to charge the vehicle, use’ regenerative braking’, which uses the energy created by the HEV’s braking system. The regenerative braking system can also be used in other types of electric cars.
